Event Description:

Hear from three experts on some of the hottest immigration topics today, and get your questions answered! Our panel will provide information on the changing demographics in Minnesota including the impending labor shortage in Minnesota and how immigrants will help fill that shortage; best practices for providing religious accommodations for employees; visa options for highly-skilled immigrants; and how to appropriately review immigration documents for employment without being discriminatory. Dr. Steven C. Hine, Research Director in the Labor Market Information Office at Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development
Dr. Hine has been with the Labor Market Information Office at the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development for over 18 years, and has been Research Director of the office for the past 13 years. In this capacity, he and his staff of 30 are responsible for the production, analysis and dissemination of the official employment and unemployment statistics for the State of Minnesota. Prior to joining DEED, Dr. Hine taught economics at colleges and universities in New York, Washington, Arkansas, and Minnesota.





Loan T. Huynh, Shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A.
Loan Huynh is a Shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron and has practiced immigration law for over 20 years. She focuses on employment-based immigration, corporate immigration compliance and global mobility solutions for employers, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to mid-size companies, entrepreneurs/investors, and family-owned farms by developing practical immigration policy and strategies to meet their global mobility and immigration goals. Loan also leads Fredrikson & Bryon’s Immigration Team’s I-9 audit and corporate immigration compliance practice.



Veena A. Iyer, Shareholder at Nilan Johnson Lewis, P.A.
Among many other representation matters, Veena represents employers in EEOC proceedings alleging class claims of discrimination based on age, denial of religious accommodations, and conduct of criminal background checks. She has negotiated favorable settlements in putative class actions involving claims of failure to provide religious accommodations. She is involved with the Minnesota Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Minnesota Women Lawyers, Twin Cities Diversity in Practice, Harvard Law School Twin Cities Alumni Association, along with numerous others.

Laura Yuen is a general assignment reporter covering the Twin Cities as part of MPR News' metro unit. Her radio series on young Somali-Americans, "Civil War Kids," won the national Society of Professional Journalists New America Award, which honors work that explores issues of importance to immigrant communities living in the U.S. Laura's stories have also earned national recognition from the Asian American Journalists Association and regional honors from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
